Children Rescued from Nicaragua Dump to sing in Litchfield-Sponsored by new Rotary Club of Litchfield Hills

Saturday night, September 15th, at 7:30 PM, the newly chartered Rotary Club of Litchfield Hills is bringing 14 boys rescued from the dump in Chinandega, Nicaragua, to St. Anthony of Padua Church in Litchfield (49 South Street-Route 63, Suggested Donation $10.00). The boys, ages 9 to 14 years have performed before the Pope and President Clinton and on this trip will be singing at the United Nations in New York. We wish to create awareness in support of the multifaceted Rotary project which rescued and nurtures them, providing nutritious food, clothing housing and medical care for thousands of refugees from Hurricaine Mitch, including schools for both sighted and blind children, and promoting self-sustaining micro-farming communities.

In May, Don Treimann, Cornwall, CT resident, founding President of the Rotary Club of Litchfield Hills, went to Chinandega and saw the malnourished children remaining on the dump, run to meet the garbage trucks to search for food. "When I opened the window of the car, the heat and the flies and the stench were overwhelming. At first, my friend Father Marco Dessey had difficulty luring the children from the dump to attend school. Now that meals are offered, 800 children attend the school in grades 1-3. Father Marco and Rotarian Frank Huezo, the Houston small business-owner who spearheaded the Rotary involvement in the project will be here with the children on the 15th.

We have photos of the choir, the project in Nicaragua, of Cornwall resident Don Treimann at the project, several videos including one which won an Emmy of the project and also videos of the choir.

Founding President Don Treimann is Vice Chairman of the United Nations NGO/DPI (1800 Nongovernmental Organizations). The newly chartered Rotary Club of Litchfield Hills is one of the few of the 30,000 Rotary Clubs in the world which meets for breakfast Saturday mornings at the Cornwall Inn on Route 7 in Cornwall.

Sincerely,

Ann Treimann
